The grandaddy of website marketing strategy is article marketing.  Article marketing gives you a chance to attract both search engine bots and real live readers — and potential customers. 

When you write an article to promote your site, submit it to an article directory.  The article directory will allow you to add a resource box in which you can add a backlink to your site and make a little pitch to get your reader to click through.  If your article is on an article directory, it may be picked up by a newsletter publisher or blogger, who has the write to republish your article, provided that they include the resource box.  This exposes your article — and your resource box — to a greater number of human readers and provides an increased number of backlinks for you.

As with all of the content that you write on your site or off-site to promote it, you should concentrate on well-written, original, informative prose.  Optimize your articles for your well-chosen keywords.  And beware of submitting duplicate content.  When Google encounters the same article twice, it only recognizes the first version to be indexed.  So rewrite your article every time you submit it to another article directory. 

A frequent mistake in article marketing is to do too little of it.  Aim to submit a new, original, keyword-optimized article daily.  Although this is a task that you can outsource if time is tight and your budget allows, don’t simply abandon it to someone else to complete for you.  Keep a close eye on the content that is being submitted to market your site, so that you can be sure that it reflects the quality of your site.
